Ask the Restaurant Legal Professionals: Can You Improve Employee Relations?"Today's question: We have noticed an uptick in union organizing within the restaurant industry. In the absence of a union, can quick-service operators do anything to give employees a similar sense of empowerment when it comes to labor relations?Historically, the restaurant industry has had a very small percent of its workers unionized. But, in the past year and a half, there has been a dramatic increase in new union organizing activity across industries including quick-service businesses. Many restaurant workers see union membership as a way to obtain better working conditions and wages. But restaurants can achieve similar results without the presence of a third party by maintaining a culture of positive employee relations. To create positive employee relations, businesses should focus on enhancing employee loyalty and engagement; developing an employee relations infrastructure; and being prepared to identify and resolve all sources of lingering workplace anxiety."Read more: https://ow.ly/BPGC50PkN1O via QSR MagazineFisher Phillips #Restaurants #RestaurantIndustry #Hospitality #HospitalityIndustry #HospitalityLaw #WorkersUnion #Unions #WorkersUnionized

Here's a thought for all the quick-service operators out there. With the rise of union organizing in the industry, it's time to think about how we can empower our employees. It's all about building positive employee relations. Let's focus on boosting loyalty and engagement - transparency, regular meetings, and including employees in decisions can go a long way. And let's not forget about creating a safe and inclusive workplace that values diversity. Remember, it's not just about meeting industry standards, it's about exceeding them and creating a workplace people are proud to be part of.

In yesterday's University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, School of Labor and Employment Relations "Leadership and Employee Engagement" class, we discussed the leader's role in fostering employee engagement. The simple act of planning a new hire's first day will set the tone for their employment experience. It tells employees that leaders care, and the employee is valued. It also sets the stage for how engaged the new hire will be. One of my favorite practices is how Chick-fil-A Restaurants places individual signs along their entranceway at headquarters and supply locations. These signs welcome employees by name during their first month of service.Does your organization go above and beyond to welcome and engage employees from day one (and before)? Is it recognized as what Dan Heath calls a 'moment that matters?' Day one should be a "peak" for your new hire. They should want to take a selfie and post it on social media!#leadership SafetyAnd Consulting Associates, Inc. #engagement Panera Bread
