Jonathan Taylor Thomas was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, United States. He is the son of Claudine Gonsalves, a personal manager and social worker, and Stephen Weiss, an industrial sales manager. His parents got divorced in 1991. Joans has one brother, Joel Thomas Weiss. His uncle is playwright and actor Jeff Weiss. Thomas has Pennsylvania Dutch and Portuguese ancestry. Weiss graduated with honors from Chaminade College Preparatory School in West Hills, California, In 2000. After graduation, he enrolled at Harvard University, where he studied Philosophy and History.
