Thank you for sharing this article. Yes, you are absolutely right Dr. Chokshi regarding why integrating public health and health care matters, and yes we must and can do it now. To achieve it, we really do need policy interventions to improve collaboration! The level of integration between primary care and public health is all about moving from isolation to mutual awareness, cooperation, collaboration, partnership and, finally, merger. However, there is no generally accepted understanding of coordinating public health practice with that of medical/clinical care. These two practices are implemented very differently, especially in American. This is in spite of the fact that the integration of clinical primary care and public health can cover a wide range of activities such as health promotion, health education, prevention activities, chronic disease management, screening, immunization and communicable disease control, information systems activities, development of best practice guidelines, conducting needs assessments, quality assurance and evaluation.

Health is much more than what happens within the healthcare system: It’s about meeting basic human needs. Five years ago, we launched the #RILifeIndex in partnership with the Brown University School of Public Health to capture Rhode Islanders’ perceptions of these social determinants of health, to drive the work we do at #BCBSRI to build healthier communities, and to share what we learn with policy makers, public health advocates, and community leaders.Today, watch as Melissa Clark, PhD, presents robust trend data on how Rhode Islanders perceive their health and well-being from our fifth annual #RILifeIndex.
